It's one of those great horror movies that's so awful it's fantastic, and Leprechaun is one of those movies. The storyline is completely off the rails, the acting is over the top, and the visual effects are so awful they're laughable. But despite this, everything works together in the end to produce a picture that is both enjoyable and engaging. Jennifer Aniston's performance in her first picture is unexpectedly strong, and Warwick Davis is fantastic in the role he plays as the leprechaun. It is highly recommended that you see Leprechaun if you like goofy horror films like those that it is based on. Just don't go into it expecting to be frightened since the chances are far higher that this movie will make you chuckle than scream.The depiction of an enraged leprechaun by Warwick Davis has become legendary. After visiting his homeland Ireland in 1983, Dan O'Grady returns to North Dakota. O'Grady learns after burying the riches that the leprechaun murdered his wife. O'Grady uses a four-leaf clover to trap the leprechaun. He's dead before he can burn him.
Ten years later, J. D. Redding and his teenage daughter Tory rent the O'Grady farmhouse for the summer. With the aid of contract workers Nathan Murphy, his 10-year-old brother Alex, and their dimwitted friend Ozzie Jones, the farmhouse is being repainted. While scouring the basement, Ozzie overhears the leprechaun's cry for help and misidentifies him as a child. By pulling the four-leaf clover from the box, he unleashes the leprechaun. Ozzie is informed by the leprechaun that he is an Irish cobbler who emigrated to America in quest of his riches. After failing to convince others that he had seen a leprechaun, Ozzie spots a rainbow and follows it in hopes of finding a pot of gold. Alex follows Ozzie out of worry for his well-being. A bag holding 100 gold coins magically appears before Ozzie. After Ozzie examines the gold and mistakenly swallows a coin, they conceal it in an ancient well in an attempt to cure Ozzie's brain.
J. D. gets tricked by the leprechaun on the farm into walking into a trap by the leprechaun's disguise as a cat, which causes him pain when he bites his hand. After Tory and the others take the leprechaun to the hospital, the leprechaun leaves on a tricycle. While Alex and Ozzie are checking the gold's purity in a pawn shop, the leprechaun kills the shopkeeper, Joe, for stealing his gold and then escapes after polishing Joe's shoes. A police officer pulls over the leprechaun on his way back to the farm because he is speeding in the go-kart he built for himself. The officer is pursued by the leprechaun into the woods, where the officer is shot and killed. After returning to the farm, the leprechaun begins searching for the pot of gold by polishing the shoes of each he encounters. Following their visit to the hospital, the group returns to the farmhouse. Nathan goes outdoors to check the looting and is injured by a bear trap placed by the leprechauns. In the open air, the mob swarms the leprechaun and beats him senseless with clubs and rocks.
When a gun is found in the house, the leprechaun is shot repeatedly. They attempt to depart, but the leprechaun has wrecked the truck's engine. The leprechaun terrorizes the group until Ozzie reveals he and Alex found the treasure. Tory retrieves the satchel and gives it to the leprechaun. They head to the hospital, expecting the worst. As he checks his fortune, the leprechaun finds he's missing Ozzie's final cent. Ozzie tells them that O'Grady had a stroke and was taken to a nursing home. By throwing dirty shoes at the leprechaun, the group diverts his attention, and he's obliged to shine them as Tory drives away. Tory goes to the home to kill the leprechaun.
The leprechaun assumes the identity of O'Grady in the nursing home. As Tory flees, the leprechaun tosses O'Grady's bleeding body down the elevator shaft after having followed him to an elevator. Before passing away, O'Grady advises her that the only way to kill the leprechaun is with a four-leaf clover, which grows in plenty outside the property. Tory returns to the farmhouse in search of a clover, but she is attacked by the leprechaun and rescued by Nathan and Ozzie. The leprechaun is gravely injured while trying to retrieve the last gold coin, which Ozzie admits to consuming. Alex takes a four-leaf clover uncovered by Tory, connects it to a piece of chewing gum, and shoots it into the leprechaun's mouth, causing him to evaporate before he can kill Ozzie. Despite plunging down the well, the leprechaun's skeleton emerges and proclaims, "I want my gold." After Nathan pushes the leprechaun back into the well, he ignites both artifacts with gasoline. Tory is reconciled with her father, marries Nathan, and has a child when the police arrive. At first, the leprechaun was intended to run away and return to Ireland. However, Warwick Davis, the Irish actor cast in the role of the leprechaun, was unable to begin filming because he lacked the proper work visa.
